Office Word 2007 – Referencing using the ‘Harvard’ system

October 28th, 2008 by Roybott in Computing

As I’m currently in my last year at Hull University I’m expected to write a number of ‘proper’ reports, this includes having correctly laid out citations and references. Obviously one of the great features of Word in Office 2007 is the citation, reference and bibliography management. Hull University expect us to use the Harvard referencing style for our references which for some reason (I don’t know why) Microsoft made a decision not to include as a built in style for references.

But all is not lost! after a bit (more than I expected) of time searching around on the internet I found out that new styles can be added through the use of .XSL files and then eventually I found that someone had made one for the Harvard system (or at least an interpretation of it which happily matches the requirements of my University)

so if you need to use citations and references in Word 2007 and also need to use the Harvard style of references then simply go to the following site, download the files and place them where it tells you to :)

Thank you Yves!

Creating a Gantt Chart in Excel 2007

October 27th, 2008 by Roybott in Computing

While I’m currently in my 3rd year at Hull University I need to create a couple of Gantt charts for various projects/reports, so I wondered if it was at all possible to create a Gantt chart from within Excel 2007. Having never seen one in the list of available charts in Excel I wasn’t too sure, but it turns out you can!

Check out the following link for a very simple step by step video on how to do it: http://www.projectsmart.co.uk/creating-a-gantt-chart-using-excel.html

Laptop Function key to Enable Wireless, not working in Vista?

December 2nd, 2007 by Roybott in Computing

After formatting my old Packard Bell Easynote R8740 laptop and installing Windows Vista on it I couldn’t get my Wireless to work. Vista diagnosed the problem and suggested I “Turn on wireless capability” at which point I realised that my wireless was turned off and the shortcut/function key (Fn + F2) wasn’t working. The Fn key was working in combination with other keys, such as the volume and brightness +/-, but just didn’t do anything when I pressed the one relating to the wireless.

While searching around the Internet I found loads of forum messages telling people to use the switch on the laptop or the function key to enable their wireless, which suprsingly fixed alot of peoples problem, but I couldn’t find much relating to the problem I was having and nothing related to this laptop and the problem.

In an attempt to fix the problem I thought I would try installing the “Wireless hotkey and indicator driver” which is intended for my laptop but which also says is only compatible with Windows XP. I had a little trouble installing it but ensuring I ran the installer as Administrator fixed that. Unfortunately after I had installed it and rebooted, which I had a little icon indicating that my wireless was off, I still couldn’t turn my wireless back on.

Eventually I realised that the program, which now starts on startup, wasn’t itself running in Administrator mode… after setting its property to start in Administrator mode my Wireless now works :)
